This month, Leventhorpe’s Year 7s are participating in their first interhouse competition, alongside all of the other years. Their sport is football, and the first matches for Y Band were Lawrence vs. Fawbert and Newsom vs. Wilkins. I chose to watch all of Lawrence’s matches during the pre-LevFest games, as they are down as the underdogs of the interhouse.
Lawrence vs. Fawbert
Fawbert start with the ball, with Philip Adofo pushing up highly and using his skills to get past the Lawrence players. Philip then hit a strong pass to Aiden Mustafa who hit the ball top bins in the back of the net, making the score 1-0 to Fawbert. Lawrence then ran up to make a goal but missed, letting Fawbert take the ball. Philip Adofo then took a shot but Lawrence’s keeper, Albie Driscoll, saved it. Lawrence continued to attempt to score but kept missing. Lawrence player Archie Welch then sprinted with the ball, passing it to Grace Broughton on Lawrence’s team, who then missed the goal. Philip then ran forward to shoot, but missed, hitting the crossbar. Albie then made a daring save, running out of the goal to tackle the Fawbert player, Oscar Smith who then lost the ball. However, Philip then whacked the ball, and it hit the back of the net. The final whistle blew, finishing the game 2-0 to Fawbert.
Lawrence vs. Wilkins
There was a snappy start to this game, with Wilkins player Frankie Gordon hitting the ball up to Oliver Surl, whose shot at goal was saved by
Lawrence’s keeper Albie Driscoll. However, Wilkins were playing with an extra player, resulting in a penalty for Lawrence, which was saved by the Wilkins keeper, Bertie Taylor. Frankie then got the ball and took a shot against Albie, who deflected it, but then conceded a goal when Amelia Morgan, a strong Wilkins player, knocked the ball into the net. 1-0 to Wilkins was the final result after a few minutes of equal sided playing.
I spoke with Amelia Morgan on how she felt the match went:
Q: How do you feel to have scored the winning goal in the Lawrence vs. Wilkins match?
A: I feel good about scoring the winning goal as it was the only goal Wilkins scored, and it was scored by a girl even though boys were hogging the ball. It made me feel proud.
Q: Why is it special to know that you won the match for your form?
A: It is special because I have added points to the Wilkins result which made me feel happy as I am helping boost my form up on the table for the interhouse. I could be the one who helps Wilkins win!
Newsom vs. Lawrence
A few shots on target were played against Lawrence at the start of the match, until Newsom’s player, Maddox McNight, smashed the ball into the left corner of the net. Erin Ings, Newsom’s sports captain, was then subbed on for Toby Wilsher and the game continued with Albie’s goal kick. Newsom hit a few skills onto Lawrence and got to the goal, with a shot saved by Albie. He then hit the ball right up to the other side of the pitch, which was then kicked back down to the other side of the pitch. The game then ended 1-0 to Newsom.
The final results for Y Band were as follows:
Now, all the forms have played half of the other forms, and it’s time for them to play the rest to decide who will win the title of Year 7 Interhouse champion. As the teams lined up on LevFest morning, glitter flew everywhere, and ribbons fluttered in the sun. The atmosphere was ecstatic as everyone took their seats on the AstroTurf, and Miss Hay began to explain what was going to happen. I decided to start by watching Barnard vs. Fawbert, the game with the predicted winners, Barnard.
The game started with a speedy kick from Barnard, and a shot against Fawbert’s keeper, which missed the goal. Aiden Mustafa in Fawbert then got the ball, but was tackled by Adya Davies in Barnard who then dribbled the ball to the goal. Philip Adofo, a strong Fawbert player, then tackled the ball off them for a Fawbert goal kick. Ollie Pickton, the strong Barnard player, then deflected the ball but hit his hand for a hand ball, which Aiden Mustafa took, but missed the goal. Ollie Pickton then smacked the ball, and it hit the back of the net, making it 1-0 to Barnard. After a minute of playing, the game ended with the score unchanged.
I spoke to Cara Mitchinson, the sports captain of Barnard, about her experience on the pitch:
Q: How do you feel about winning?
A: I feel good and happy because we kept the ball for a long time.
Q: What’s your favourite thing about being sports captain?
A: I like choosing the teams and helping win the matches.
Q: Do you think you have a chance of winning the interhouse?
A: Yes, because we have lots of good players on the team.
The next game was Rivers versus Newsom. The game started smoothly with Rivers taking the ball and pushing up. Lucas in Rivers dribbled smoothly down the pitch, and took a shot which was deflected by Toby Wilsher. Oscar Kehoe then dribbled down the pitch to cross the ball but was met with a Rivers free goal. Toby Wilsher in Newsom then hit the ball up and sprinted to it, until Lucy Nixon smacked the ball away from him with incredible speed. Kyran, the Newsom goalkeeper, then took a goal kick, which was tackled away by Lucy Nixon. Lola Purcell then took a shot that hit the crossbar and flew into the other half, which was then shot into the goal by Harrison. The game ended 1-0 to Rivers.
The Wilkins v. Cutforth game was off to a quick start, with George Hook in Wilkins hitting the ball to Conner, taking a shot but missing. George Hook then took the ball and took a shot, but missed. Frankie Gordon then crossed the ball, but no one received it. Cutforth then took the ball, but it was taken by George Hook, who took a shot that was saved by the Cutforth keeper. Wilkins then smacked the ball into the back of the net, making it 1-0 to Wilkins. A free kick for Wilkins then commenced, but the shot was cleared and turned to a goal kick. Cutforth then took a free kick as the ball hit off the referee, Mr Turvill. The game ended 1-0 to Wilkins.
The final game was Lawrence versus Moore. Moore passed the ball to Zachary, who ran and got tackled by Hendy Hoang. However, Zachary got the ball back and hit the ball past Lawrence keeper, Alfie Wilsher. 1-0 to Moore. Alfie then got the ball again after a shot from Lily in Moore, and a scramble for the ball clumped across the pitch. Lily then got the ball and scored, ending a slightly shorter game 1-0 to Moore.
The results:
1st: Rivers
2nd: Barnard
3rd: Moore
4th: Wilkins
5th: Newsom
6th: Cutforth
7th: Fawbert
8th: Lawrence
Unfortunately, Lawrence were unable to shake their underdog position, but its been an amazing LevFest for everyone!
