Sign Language Awareness Week

British Sign Language Awareness Week is on the 13th-19th of March 2023.

This exciting week helps to raise awareness about British Sign Language and encourages the general public to learn more about the language. According to the British Deaf Association, British Sign Language (BSL) is the preferred language of over 87,000 Deaf people in the UK for whom English may be a second or third language.


British Sign Language (BSL) is commonly used in the deaf/ hard of hearing community, however, some people who are non-verbal or who have difficulties communicating also may use sign language. BSL is a method of communicating by using visual gestures and signs.

Why learn sign language?

  • It is a new life skill

  • You can become more expressive if you know the language

  • You are supporting and helping others in the community

  • It celebrates more diversity in society

  • Improves your overall communication skills

  • Helps improve your CV, if you apply for a job

  • Join a BSL club

  • Learn it with a friend or family together

  • Use facial expressions

  • Don't exaggerate your lips
